The Journey of Tea Labor Community Children towards Education
There are more than fifty different marginalized ethnic groups living in Bangladesh with a population about 70 million. The tea community is one of these ethnic groups. In Bangladesh there are more than 166 tea gardens with approximate 700,000 tea labor community. Among this tea garden near about 130 are located in Sylhet region.
In the serene landscapes where lush green tea gardens flourish, lies a community whose daily toil contributes to the soothing cup of tea enjoyed by many around the world. Yet, behind the tranquil facade of these gardens, lies a stark reality – the struggle of tea labor community children to access education. Today, we delve into the lives of these resilient children and the challenges they face in pursuit of knowledge amidst the shadows of poverty.
Nestled amidst the rolling hills, tea labor communities form the backbone of the tea industry. However, the harsh reality of their lives often goes unnoticed. Earning meager wages, many families barely make ends meet, grappling with the burden of poverty day in and day out. Right now the daily wages of a tea labor is only 170 Bangladeshi Taka (BDT) which is equivalent about 1.5 US Dollar in such circumstances, which was only BDT 120 up to last year; education becomes a distant dream for their children, overshadowed by the pressing need for survival. On the other hand the majority of the tea gardens do not currently have any government primary schools. For example, there are 26 tea gardens in Sylhet district but there do not have any primary school. And in Moulvibazar district there are 92 tea garden and only 62 gardens have government primary school and most of them established last six to seven years. So, still 30 tea gardens do not have any primary school. Here I left out about secondary school. So, in this situation what will be the future generation of tea labor children!
Despite the adversities they face, the children of tea labor communities harbor dreams as vast as the expansive tea gardens they call home. They yearn for a better future, one illuminated by the beacon of education. Yet, their aspirations are often stifled by the harsh realities of their circumstances. On the other hand the majority of the tea gardens do not currently have any government primary schools.
With limited access to schools and resources, many are forced to forego their education which will keep perpetuating the cycle of poverty for future generations. Considering this adverse situation since 2015 Ethnic Community Development Organization (ECDO) have taken an initiative to provide support tea labor children for ensuring their primary education with support from Hei Verden a well known Norwegian development agency. But still ECDO’s initiative and support is quite small in compare to their needs.
Education holds the key to breaking free from the shackles of poverty. It empowers individuals, providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to carve a path towards a brighter tomorrow. For the children of tea labor communities, education represents not only a means of escape but also a beacon of hope amidst the darkness of their circumstances.
As we reflect on the struggles faced by tea labor community children, it becomes imperative for us to extend a helping hand. By supporting initiatives aimed at providing access to education, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of these children. Whether through scholarships, infrastructure development, or community outreach programs, every contribution, no matter how small, has the power to transform lives and shape futures.
