Celebration of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples
On 9th August Ethnic Community Development Organisation (ECDO) marked World Indigenous Day with a colourful rally and an engaging discussion meeting at Hiluachera tea garden, Sylhet. The event brought together indigenous community leaders, tea garden workers, NGO representatives, and local residents to raise their voices for the constitutional recognition of indigenous peoples in Bangladesh.
The rally, led by ECDO, highlighted the rich cultural heritage of indigenous communities while drawing attention to the ongoing struggles they face in education, health care, and cultural preservation. Participants marched with banners calling for immediate policy action and inclusion of indigenous identity in the national constitution.
Following the rally, a discussion meeting was held where speakers stressed the urgent need to ensure primary education for all indigenous children, equitable access to health services, and the safeguarding of indigenous cultural practices. They emphasised that without constitutional recognition, indigenous communities remain at risk of marginalisation, and their development prospects are hindered.
Mr.Lakshmikanta Singh, Executive Director of ECDO shared their ongoing efforts to empower indigenous communities through education support and advocacy. They urged the government and development partners to collaborate closely with indigenous leaders to create policies that address their specific needs and aspirations. As this year’s UN theme “Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping Futures” he also emphasised that AI could be a powerful tool for documenting indigenous knowledge and amplifying indigenous voices in policymaking, but only if deployed with full respect for indigenous rights and traditional values
The event concluded with a united call to action: for any future government in Bangladesh to formally recognise indigenous peoples in the constitution and to take meaningful steps to protect their rights, culture, and heritage.
