ECDO Celebrated The International Day of World Indigenous Peoples

On the occasion of International Day of the World Indigenous peoples, ECDO and local Khasi Student Union jointly organized a discussion meeting at ECDO office, Sylhet. Professor Dr. Faisal Ahmmed ex-Dean, Social Sciences faculty of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology was present as chief guest in that program. The theme of the day was ‘Role of Indigenous women in the preservation and Transmission of traditional knowledge’. At the beginning of the event just after well come speech by the executive director of ECDO, Nongpoklai Sinha made a multimedia presentation on the theme of event.

Later, in the open discussion session speakers said that the government recently directed various media and civil society representatives not to use the term of ‘Indigenous’ in various discussion meetings and media talk shows. The government was demanded to give constitutional recognition to the indigenous peoples immediately. In addition, there was a strong demand for the formulation of indigenous protection laws in the country. Finally, the  guests present at that event urged to the government to launch a special aid scheme for the indigenous who are struggling to manage their families due to the post-Covid-19 and current increase in the prices of daily necessities. Representatives of various indigenous communities were present in this meeting.
